Injuries and accidents are no laughing matter for a business
If an injury is so severe it causes an employee to lose income or to suffer lasting damage, a company is likely to face a lawsuit. Prevention is always the best cure but getting the message across to employees in an effective manner can be difficult. Showing employees health and safety videos will generally be treated as a chance to have a break from work as opposed to generating a better and safer working environment.
This is why facing these serious issues with a touch of humour may be the best option for a company. Collectively, your employees can have a laugh at the cartoon, perhaps pointing out times when they were involved with an incident but inwardly, they will realise that they don’t want to be involved in an incident that is depicted in the cartoon. After all, if you make a mistake or cause an accident that is recognised as being quite silly, your reputation will fall and people will no doubt engage in some good-natured banter at your expense.
There are strong business reasons for minimising injuries and dangers at work, but getting the message across regarding health and safety isn’t always easy. It may be that tackling this issue with humour is the solution for your company and this office health and safety cartoon could pay dividends in the long run.
Office health and safety cartoon is the perfect addition to any workspace.
When it comes to office health and safety, one of the most common complaints you will hear relate to the fact that most of the advice and instructions are “just common sense”. This is the thing about health and safety, health and safety should be a natural thing but for too many offices, it seems as though common sense is in short supply at times.
This is why this office health and safety cartoon is the perfect addition to any workspace. A great way to get across the importance of staying safe is to have some fun with it. Clearly an office that has so many so things going wrong at the same time would likely be closed down, or burned down, in a day or two, but all across the United Kingdom, isolated incidents found in this picture are taking place all the time. And while this is a funny cartoon, the opposite of a “Where’s Wally?” illustration because here everyone is acting like a wally, there are some serious points to be taken from it.
Restaurant kitchen fire hazards…
Taking steps to prevent accidents and keep employees safe is extremely important in the day-to-day running of a restaurant kitchen. For health and safety officers, working in an environment as fast-paced and demanding as this can prove to be a real challenge. In a typical kitchen shift you may find yourself faced with spillages and leaks, electrical faults, food contamination and more. Staying on top of these risks, however, can be easier said than done
There are so many potential hazards, and you’ll have to be on your guard to make sure all your colleagues are safe. Today we’ll talk briefly about one of the most dangerous risks that can lead to potentially huge losses in revenue and even permanent closure – kitchen fires.
Fire safety – Fire Hazards….
Restaurant kitchens have all the right ingredients to enable fires to ignite and grow. Around the workplace you’ll find open flames, hot equipment, industrial cooking oils and flammable cleaning chemicals. Staff members need to make sure they take care when going about their daily business.
If your kitchen has dirty extraction ducts and cooker hoods covered in grease and grime, your risk of fire increases due to poor ventilation. Similarly, fat and grease left on cooking utensils after use can also be hazardous. Look around your kitchen just now. Are there any frayed electrical cords or faulty equipment? These could also easily spark and cause an electrical fire.
It might be necessary to cook with open flames, but these can also cause a fire risk. If staff uniforms are loose or they have long uncovered hair, they can easily set alight if they come in contact with the heat. It’s also a good idea to store all flammable materials away from open flames and other sources of heat around the kitchen.
How to reduce the risk of fire
Although fire hazards are one of the most dangerous health and safety risks, there are steps you can take to begin making your kitchen a safer working environment:
- Keep a portable fire extinguisher handy – and train staff how to use this
- Clean up grease – from the vents, walls, oven and surfaces
- Store flammable liquids properly – in tightly sealed containers
- Tidy away – any paper, linens or cardboard
- Use brightly coloured materials – to draw employees’ attention to potential hazards
- Create visual cues around the kitchen – that highlights any danger
Your could also design a comprehensive training manual for staff, and advise them of what the health and safety best practices are. One way to help increase the ‘stickyness’ of your training is to include visual imagery. Although lengthy training sessions and coaching are important, you also want a method that will actually resonate with your employees long after they leave the workplace.
Health and safety cartoons
One visual medium you should consider is cartoons. These work tremendously well, especially if they convey the information in a humorous way. I have designed a cartoon that highlights the many common restaurant healthy and safety risks, which is also light hearted and fun. You can find out more details about this cartoon here. I also offer a bespoke service, so if you have something else in mind or would like custom work done please contact me here and we can discuss.
A safety cartoon could supply the answer…
Whichever sector your business is in, it’s more than likely that health and safety plays an important role in your day-to-day functions. Whether that’s employing full-time advisers, creating and updating manuals or designing training programmes, these procedures are necessary for the wellbeing of both you and your employees.
As well as helping make your workplace a safer environment for staff, investing in your health and safety practices also makes good business sense. Improvements can help reduce your accident losses. They can also improve your business profile with your customers and drive overall company efficiency.
Which methods work the best? Viewing a safety cartoon?
If you want to develop a positive health and safety culture in your organisation, a good place to start is by creating a comprehensive training programme. This may sound like a large undertaking, but having a solid foundation to build upon is incredibly important.
Having a committed health and safety policy that aids your training programme can also help with your efforts. This doesn’t need to be too complicated or time consuming. A document that lets employees and other stakeholders know about your commitment will work. In your policy it should clearly state who does what, when and how they do it.
Following on from this, you could also hire a dedicated health and safety officer to oversee the design and upkeep of the policy and training guide. As your business grows, trying to keep on top of all procedures and implement any new guidelines can be frustrating without the proper support.
While these are all helpful suggestions, they can be quite time consuming. Thankfully, there’s one health and safety tool that can quickly convey your message, that’s also easy for your staff to digest. The health and safety cartoon.
Why choose a health and safety cartoon?
Put yourself in your employees’ shoes. They will be constantly bombarded with information each and every day. After a tiring shift, or in the middle of a particularly long week, most of this will probably go over their heads. A great way to smash through all this information clutter is with a cartoon.
The reason why cartoons have been used throughout history is that they have an irresistible appeal. People just have to read them and know what’s going on. They get curious. If you have some dotted around your workplace, in the few seconds it takes for staff to satisfy their curiosity, your vital health and safety message has been delivered.
A good safety cartoon should include some humour, so your staff can get the point whilst also making it easy for them to remember the message. It really makes it easier to internalise training if serious information can be made light hearted and fun, and cartoons are excellent at doing this.
